About the Book

This book is intended primarily as a textbook for students of NEP 2020 Undergraduate - Physics Major & Minor, Electronics Major & Minor as well as students of B.Tech. courses in Engineering & Technology. The contents of the book have been chosen, basically as per the prescribed syllabus of NEP & AICTE. This book may also be of interest for graduate students appearing for entrance examinations of various postgraduate programmes. Special attentions are given to the conceptual development and clarity of the theory, supplemented by proper illustrations, diagrams, graphs etc. during the writing of this book.

The first part of this book includes brief discussion starting from quantum theory of radiation (Planck’s law, Wien’s law, Rayleigh-Jean’s law, Stefan-Boltzmann law, photo-electric effect, Compton effect, De’ Broglie’s hypothesis, Heisenberg uncertainty principle to quantum mechanics (concept of wave function, Schrodinger’s time-dependent and time-independent equations, operator formalism, applications of Schrodinger’s equation in bounded and unbounded media). In the second part we have discussed about concepts of statistical mechanics in details including microstates and macro states, phase space and phase trajectory, concepts of ensembles, statistical weight, density of states, relation between entropy and thermodynamic probability, degeneracy and non-degeneracy, fundamental postulates and detailed calculations of MB, BE & FD statistical distributions as well as their applications. Concept of Fermi level, Fermi energy, Boson, Fermions and graphical representation of three distributions are also discussed. The book contains sufficient numerical worked out problems and exercise questions.

About the Authors

Prof. Sandip Dey has done his M.Phil in Electronics, and is working as a Senior faculty member in the Department of Electronic Science at Barrackpore Rastraguru Surendranath College, Kolkata. He is also a honorary visiting faculty member in the Department of Electronics & Telecommunication, Berhampore Polytechnic College, West Bengal. He is the recipient of many national and state level awards in academics and career consultancy.

Dr. Priyadarshi Majumdar is a Doctorate in Physics, working as an Assistant Professor and is a head of the Department of Electronic Science at Barrackpore Rastraguru Surendranath College Kolkata. He is also the member of UG Board of Studies of Electronics at West Bengal State University and is a honorary visiting faculty member in the Department of Electronics & Telecommunication, Berhampore Polytechnic College, West Bengal.
