Description
About the book
Designed for readers with no prior experience in video game development, this book offers a practical, hands-on introduction to creating games using the Pygame library. Starting with the classic two-player Pong game, it progressively guides readers through the development of increasingly sophisticated features, including AI-controlled opponents, score saving and loading, localization, leaderboards, power-ups and multiple game levels. The journey culminates in the development of the more advanced Snake game, bringing together the concepts and skills acquired throughout the book.
Along the way, readers explore essential Pygame concepts such as rectangles, text and image manipulation, sprites and sprite groups, event handling, custom events, collision detection, game-speed control, sound effects, and the Clock class. Chapter-end programming exercises, complemented by objective and subjective questions in the appendix, reinforce understanding and encourage hands-on practice. Carefully selected references further support independent learning and exploration.
Whether you are a beginner taking your first steps in game programming or a student looking to strengthen your practical skills, this book provides a structured and engaging pathway to understanding game development with Python and Pygame.
