This book aims to fulfill the following two objectives. One is to better prepare students at all levels for software design and production. The other is to encourage IT company interns to take up software design as a challenge and aim higher. The latter should help fulfill a need of the industry which often complains about the lack of preparedness of new recruits and, also, of poor quality of software designers and architects. The primary reasons in both the cases can be traced to poor initial background training and a misplaced notion that computer science is primarily programming. In IT industry programmers get promoted over time to software architect's role. For such a role, it is important to identify someone who is sound in theory. Understanding underlying theory helps in developing an in-depth visualization for system design. Fulfilling two objectives at two different levels is not easy. However, an attempt has been made in the book to keep a balance between theoretical foundations and practical considerations.
